I love butcher block counter tops! They are so classic! And they get EXPENSIVE if you order it. I feel like it's a really solid DIY. I mean, you can't really DIY granite counters, but butcher block is completely doable. It really puts our faux-butcher block laminate veneer counters (from the 1980's) in our kitchen to shame.
